Biological Scales

An interactive visualization of biological processes across length and time scales. Each point represents a biological process, plotted on logarithmic axes. The goal is to 1) further populate this chart over time, 2) improve the accuracy of the length and time scales, and 3) use this chart to reason about biological organization, information in biology, and prioritization of biological data for various bioengineering/clincal objective functions.

Labels appear when zoomed in. All data sourced from peer-reviewed literature.

About this visualization

This chart maps biological processes under physiological conditions across multiple orders of magnitude in both space and time. The x-axis represents the characteristic length scale of each process on a logarithmic scale (from nanometers to meters), while the y-axis represents the characteristic time scale (from milliseconds to decades). All data points are sourced from peer-reviewed scientific literature by a browser-enabled LLM and manually verified. Notify me of any inaccuracies or suggestions for additional biological processes to add.
